"Time is but memory in the making." - Vladimir Nabakov
A beautiful blend of science fiction and horror, Recursion by Blake Crouch is an exquisite, mind-bending
tale about memory.
Memories help frame who we are, they paint pictures of our pasts and inform the decisions we make every day. Now imagine all those memories you know and trust: your last birthday party, your wedding, or even the first time you met your best friend, only now they’re different. The vibrant colors have all faded, and the details of your life as you have always known them have been replaced with memories of a life you never lived.
This is False Memory Syndrome and the basis of this epic science fiction story. People all over the world are going mad, their minds plagued with memories they never experienced. But this syndrome is no ordinary affliction, so New York City cop Barry Sutton and neuroscientist Helena Smith must work together to solve the crisis before it tears the world, and reality itself, apart.
Easily my favorite read of this year so far, Recursion packs a major punch and will even leave you breathless at times. I won’t give too much away, as I truly believe this is the best way to experience the book. What I will say is this book is an emotional powerhouse. I was thrilled by it, surprised by it, and was left staring at the final pages in awe.
Blake Crouch is an expert at delving into complex scientific topics while at the same time never making you feel stupid. And while usually I am not a fan of romance in my readings, the primary relationship between Barry and Helena was never forced or cheesy.
If you are looking for an intense sci-fi thriller where one of the leads is a brilliant and tenacious female scientist, I implore you to check this out. Recursion is about memory and how it weaves together the fabric of our truest selves. The story and these characters will always stay with me.
